Let's speak about Digital Signal Processing

On this issue, the Electronic Community will held the EES Forum. The 30th of March in Milan
Digital Signal Processing – in its wider sense – is a subject of particular interest within the designers community in view of the changes that are ongoing on the offer front. The seminar will bring in tuch all the people working on the subject – designers on one side and the offer from the other – to update on the status of art.. There are two H/W solutions: The DSP, available on the market since many years, and FPGAs that are trying to catch share to them. Benefits offered by each solution: in favour of DSP the possibility to act also as controller, for FPGA the parallel execution. The FPGA, with the possibility to execute more MAC (Multiply-Accumulate) operations in parallel, can reach performances unreachable by DSP.

On the other side DSP can take the job of ‘controlling’, and in fact they became DSC (Digital Signal Controller), allowing single-chip solutions.

But also other sectors – think about RISC -, seen the market potential, has introduced into their DNA the MAC gene to facilitate the realisation of DSP algorithm.

But also algorithm and development tools made available has gone thru a deep evolution.

The day is specifically addressed to designers, R&D labs responsible, buyers and any person that has to do with advanced processing technologies.

Universities have, since long time now, dedicated efforts and people to the development and deep evaluation of the themes of EES putting attention to the development of algorithm to approach new applications..

The participation of the most significant players in the market to get a view of the most traditional offer on the front of the digital signal processing. The DSP have been the components that gave, as first, life to the bases of EES and from pure DSP became then even controller: Digital Signal Controller.

The EES sector has attracted huge investments also from the FPGA manufacturer that are targeting this market segment that is enjoying a significant growth. The dedicated FPGA platforms are counting on the wide capability of parallel execution that can bring, when the repetitiveness of operation is the key, very high performances. FPGA suppliers have developed to support designers a wide set of development tools.

Components to support EES

But the surrounding world is analogue! And if DSP or FPGA can be the hearth of a system AD and DA converter are the bridge between the analogue and the digital environments. To the ever increasing performances of the digital components the manufacturers of such components have to answer. To the chain sensors have to be added; they are the eyesight, the touch, the sense of smell, the hearing and the taste.

Intellectual Property means get access to ready solutions to save time and money and get the assurance that things will work al the first shot. Also the offer on such a front is becoming reacher and wider keeping in mind the different solutions offered by the market.

For the different solutions different development tools are available to support designers, that are approaching this component world, at the best. From the software to translate algorithm into hardware implementation to the emulators for one or the other front.
