The association’s third quarter figures reveal that European electronic components DTAM is continuing to follow the historic annual trend of a strong Q1 followed by three declining quarters. The Book-to-Bill ratio was close to unity in Q3 ’08 however Q4 is likely to show a sharper decline than the historical trend as a result of the impact of the global economic uncertainty: Surprisingly, passives are leading the current European Bookings and Billings trend, with a similar pattern being followed by semiconductors, electro-mechs and other products.

According to IDEA Vice President Adam Fletcher, Q3 is traditionally a declining quarter for the European Electronic Components industry, principally due to absenteeism due to annual holidays: ‘Our figures for Q3 ’08 proved to be pretty robust and remained in line with industry forecasts and expectations’, said Fletcher. ‘Under the circumstances we must expect a steepening decline in Q4 but the critical question is by how much?’ In line with most other industry observers Fletcher admits that IDEA has little visibility but the association believes that Billings are likely to decline in the range (9%-to-12%) compared to the same quarter last year.

Bookings

Total European Distribution Bookings (Net Sales Orders Entered) in Q3 ’08 declined by (9.1%) when compared to the previous quarter and declined by (9.3%) when compared to the same period last year.

Sector specific Bookings changes in Q3’08 compared to the same period last year were: Semiconductors declined by (10.7%); Passives by (12.9%); whilst Electro-mechs and Other Components declined by (3.2%).

Billings

Total European Distribution Billings (Net Sales Invoiced less Credits) in Q3 ’08 declined by (7.5%), when compared to Q2 2008 and declined by (7.4%) when compared to the same period last year. Sector specific Billings changes in Q3’08 compared to the same period last year were: Semiconductors declined by (8%); Passives declined by (8.6%); Electro-mechs and Other Components declined by (4.6%).

About IDEA and its statistics

The International Distribution of Electronics Association (IDEA) is a consortium of independent Trade Associations operating in the global electronic component distribution market. The data included in the European DTAM report was complied from statistics provided by AFDEC (UK/Nordic), Assodel (Italy), FBDi (Germany) and SPDEI (France). Statistics are gathered quarterly from over 100 authorised distributors of electronic components operating in Denmark, France, Finland, Italy, Germany, Norway, Sweden and the UK. Members of the various trade bodies in IDEA represent 73% of the Distributor Total Available Market (DTAM) in the countries in which they operate and the Association is therefore confident that the consolidated figures included in its report provide a reliable perspective of trends in the European Electronic Component market.
